2A-D1 Quarterfinal Information
2A-D1
Region 1
Post (13-0) and Stamford (13-0)
Maxpreps rank: Post 4, Stamford 1
Points for: Post 584, Stamford 631
Points against: Post 246, Stamford 116
Stamford entered the season ranked sixth in state and have climbed up to number one as the season went on. Last year they only advanced to Bi-District, but they have 15 returning starters and they have proved themselves with their undefeated record. Aside from a 38-22 victory over Hawley, all of their victories, including the playoffs, have been by at least 22 points.
Their defense has allowed the fewest points of all 2A-DI, 11 fewer than the second fewest, Ganado.
Post entered the season unranked and now finds themselves in the Regional Final game. They are also undefeated but had several of their games within a touchdown. They have a high scoring offense and good defense, but on paper, Stamford is the far superior team.
Region II
Hamilton (13-0) and Axtell (12-1)
Maxpreps rank: Hamilton 12, Axtell 17
Points for: Hamilton 442, Axtell 469
Points against: Hamilton 186, Axtell 199
The two lowest ranked teams remaining in the playoffs meet in the fourth round. Crawford is the only common opponent (Ganado) and Hamilton defeated them 38-22. Axtell defeated Crawford 20-7. Their lone loss was a 21-7 loss to Italy.
Axtell entered the season ranked 14 and Hamilton was unranked.
Region III
Honey Grove (12-1) and Joaquin (9-4)
Maxpreps rank: Honey Grove 2, Joaquin 11
Points for: Honey Grove 533, Joaquin 548
Points against: Honey Grove 206, Joaquin 413
Honey Grove entered the season ranked third and has moved up to 2. Their lone loss was a 49-21 loss to Winnsboro. They handed Marlin a one point loss in week two.
Joaquin entered the playoffs as the four seed, behind three teams that are no longer in the playoffs, including defending state champ Timpson. They were unranked entering the season.
The winner of this game will face the winner of Ganado and Marlin in the State Semi-Finals.
Region IV
Ganado (12-1) and Marlin (10-3)
Maxpreps rank: Ganado 3, Marlin 6
Points for: Ganado 612, Marlin 437
Points against: Ganado 127, Marlin 162
Thursday at 7 p.m. at Rattler Stadium in San Marcos.
Two of the biggest match-ups in 2A-D1 happened last week when Ganado and Refugio squared off and Mason and Marlin. Ganado and Refugio went in as basically a toss-up and the Indians walked away with the eight point victory.
On the other side of Region 4, Mason went in undefeated, and the clear favorite but some last second heroics from Marlin brought them to round four.
Ganado entered the season as the number one ranked team in 2A-D1 and Marlin as the number 11 team.
Ganado is the second highest scoring team and has allowed the second fewest point (behind Stamford by 19 and 11 respectively).
The winners of these games will move on to the State Semi-Finals.
