Industrial Girls
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Industrial Cobras girls basketball team traveled to face tough teams in Angleton and Bishop, losing 38-22 to Angleton and 57-34 to Bishop. Coach Kathy Anderson said that the losses were valuable. “We learned a lot about ourselves and what we need to work on to get better,” Anderson said.
The Cobras apparently took it to heart, finishing in the top three in a pair of recent tournaments and going 9-2 in games since those two losses.The next weekend, the Cobras finished third in the Yorktown Tournament, defeating Runge 55-13, Nixon-Smiley 48-24, Banquete 55-32, and St.
Joseph 32-29, and losing only to Natalia 47-36 in the semifinals. Deziree Evans and Cecilia Jalufka led the team offensively and defensively and were named to the All-Tournament team.On Dec.
3, Industrial defeated Goliad 57-43 with three players in double figures and three others perfect from the free throw line.
Karli Stanush had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Cecilia Jalufka (11 points) and Deziree Evans (12 points) also added to the point total for the win. In addition, Kimber Linke, Lyla Kallus, and Kyler Caskey were all 100% from the free throw line.
This past weekend, the Cobras defeated Brazos 42-17, Bellville 39-29, East Bernard 50-41, and Schulenburg 53-28, and lost to Smithville 40-39 on a buzzer beater to finish second in the Schulenburg Tournament.
Industrial Boys
The Industrial Cobras boys basketball team got off to a slow start in November, but began to gain traction after Thanksgiving. The Cobras (6-5) beat Bay City 64-42 on Nov.
12 as Jake Alexander had 15 points, Gi’ziah Lopez had 13 and Braedyn Vanduren added nine. They then lost to Beeville 67-54 on Nov. 15 as Alexander scored 14, John Franz had 12 and Lopez had eight.
The Cobras lost to Karnes City 41-22 on Nov. 22 as Alexander had nine points and Franz had five.
On Nov. 25 they lost to Victoria East 48-35 as Alexander scored 13, Lopez had eight and Holden McMullen had six. The next day, the Cobras lost at St. Joseph 58-46 for a fourth straight loss.But when the team returned to action on Dec. 3 after a week off, they fixed mistakes and ran off a string of five straight wins.The Cobras played strong defense to defeat Goliad 51-36 as Alexander had 12 points and Lopez had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Brady Koop provided a spark off the bench with eight points and three steals.They continued in the Van Vleck Tournament this past weekend, storming back from 20 points down to defeat Kingsville in overtime, 57-54, on a game-winning three-pointer from Alexander. They then defeated El Campo 47-29 and beat Episcopal’s JV 51-31 to go undefeated in pool play.The Cobras faced El Campo again on Saturday, defeating them 44-34, but lost to Brazosport in the finals, 62-32.
Edna Cowgirls
After starting the season 5-1, the Cowgirls (12-3) saw their five-game win streak snapped on Nov. 23 by a 70-55 loss at Shiner, but the team then ran off a seven-game win streak.
Edna picked up a 47-39 win at Goliad on Nov. 25 and a 50-40 win at East Bernard the next day.The Cowgirls returned from the Thanksgiving break on Dec. 3 with a 51-25 home win over Ingleside, led by 18 points from Shanti Guerra.
They defeated Shiner St. Paul 48-39 and Luling 60-28 on Thursday in the Schulenburg Tournament, then beat Brazos 52-23 and Bellville 64-45 on Friday, but lost to East Bernard 57-20 on Saturday. The Cowgirls were scheduled to play Smithville on Saturday but results were unavailable.
In the midst of the holiday hoops and football playoffs, senior Isabella Plotini scored her 1,000th career point as a varsity Cowgirl and was presented with a commemorative banner.
Ganado Maidens
The Ganado Maidens dropped a pair of pre-district ballgames the week of Thanksgiving.Visiting Tidehaven defeated Ganado 45-15 on Nov. 23, and the Maidens traveled to Moulton and lost 5922 on Nov. 26.No other details or scores were available.
Girls Basketball Rankings
As of Sun., Dec. 8, the Edna Cowgirls (12-3) were ranked No. 21 in the Texas High School Girls Basketball (TXHSGBB) poll and No. 25 in MaxPreps Class 3A poll.
Looking at District 25-3A as district play begins, Tidehaven (16-0) was No. 13 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) poll, No. 22 in the TXHSGBB poll, and No. 23 in MaxPreps; and Columbus (9-4) was No.
17 in TXHSGBB but No.
73 in MaxPreps.
Boys Basketball Rankings
Also as of Sun., Dec. 8, the Edna Cowboys were ranked No. 24 and the Columbus Cardinals No. 25 in the TABC poll despite neither having played a game yet. Neither were ranked in the top 50 in MaxPreps.
District Play Opens
Pre-district games concluded over the weekend for the Edna, Industrial, and Ganado girls’ basketball programs. Edna opened 25-3A play on Tuesday at Columbus and Industrial traveled to Palacios. The Cowgirls host unbeaten Tidehaven on Friday with the JV at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:15 p.m. Industrial hosts Columbus Friday with JV at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6:15 p.m.Ganado also began 28-2A play on Tuesday by hosting Louise, but they do not have a district contest on Friday.
Instead, the Maidens are scheduled to compete in the Austwell-Tivoli Tournament Thursday through Saturday and return to district action at Weimar Dec. 10.On the boys’ side, Industrial is slated to begin 25-3A play on Dec. 17 by hosting Rice Consolidated, while Edna is supposed to host Hallettsville, depending on the football playoffs.
