Industrial Boys
The Industrial Cobras boys’ varsity built upon its second-place finish in the Van Vleck Tournament to beat Bay City, 61-53, on Tuesday, and then win three of five games in the Snook Tournament en route to another second-place trophy.
The Cobras (9-7) posted a pair of tournament wins Thursday, downing Australian team Eastern Buckets, 54-22, and later trouncing Round Top-Carmine, 72-20.
On Friday, Onalaska, 14-4 and ranked 17 th in Class 3A, beat Industrial, 77-51, but the Cobras rebounded with a 41-30 win over Snook to reach the tournament finals on Saturday, where they faced Onalaska a second time. The Wildcats won again, 73-59, to claim the tourney title.
Gi’Ziah Lopez and Brady Koop made the All-Tournament Team.
Although the Cobras dropped the pair of games to Onalaska, Industrial Coach Andrey Vanduren said he liked what he’s been seeing from his team in the pre-district season.
“The boys are really coming together as a team,” Vanduren said. “Our defense is disrupting the opponent’s offensive flow, forcing tough shots, turnovers, and creating scoring opportunities. We check all the preseason boxes with quality wins, building varsity rotational depth, and confidence heading into district play.
“Last hurdle – we have to do it when it really counts. We have to continue to play team basketball and take care of the ball.”
The Cobras hosted Rice Consolidated Tuesday to begin District 25-3A play. They travel to Tidehaven on Friday, then return to the court on Dec. 26-27 at the Luling Tournament.
Ganado Maidens
The Ganado Maidens opened their District 292A season with a 46-27 win over Louise Tuesday. Three Maidens scored in double figures, led by sophomore Michaela Estrada with 12 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, Paisley Hajovsky with 11, and Zoey Ybarra with 10.
Ganado built a 13-4 lead in the first quarter, then put the game out of reach in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Hornets 14-4 to end the game.
The Maidens followed up with a third-place finish in the 62 nd annual Redfish Classic at Austwell-Tivoli over the weekend.
Ganado defeated Nordheim 51-17 on Thursday behind 15 points from Ybarra, 10 from senior Isabel Tristan. The Maidens’ offense clicked against Nordheim, with double-figure scoring each quarter, while their defense allowed no more than six points a quarter.
The Maidens forfeited their second game in order to get back for the football semifinal game but returned to action on Saturday with a 45-19 win over Odem. Again, the Maidens’ defense controlled the game as Ganado built a 25-6 halftime lead and widened it to 37-10 to start the fourth quarter.
Ybarra, who made the All-Tournament Team, led the Maidens with 17 points as nine of the 10 players scored.
“The girls came to play today and executed our plays well,” coach Kathy Meng said. “Proud to be a Maiden.”
With the football team playing in the state championship in Arlington on Thursday, the Maidens canceled their game against Moulton on Friday. They return to action on Dec. 27 and 28 in the Palacios Tournament.
