Our Faithfulness to God
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.” (Matthew 23:23, ESV)
We have been thinking together about faith and faithfulness for the past few weeks. Jesus says it is important. Important to Him. Important to God. That means it should be important to us. Last week we noticed how God models faithfulness to us. If He is faithful to us, we should be faithful to Him.
As it was in the days of the nation of Israel, today God calls on all people to respond to His faithfulness with faithfulness (1 Cor. 15:58; Gal. 5:22). This calls for us to be faithful to God in faith, love, devotion, worship, and service. It is not enough to simply believe in Him (Jas. 2:19). We must demonstrate faithfulness (loyal love) to Him in what we think, say, and do.
This is what Jesus did. This is what the heroes of faith like Abraham did (Jas. 2:20-26). This is what it means to “walk humbly with your God” (Mic. 6:8; Zech. 7:9-10). And as we observed in Jesus’ words in Matthew 23, it is more than just “dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”
It encompasses not only our worship to God, but also our service and relationships with others. Faithfulness in marriage (Heb. 13:4; Eph. 5:33). Faithfulness in all family relationships (1 Tim. 5:4, 8). Faithfulness in serving others (Gal. 6:10; 1 Pet. 4:10). Faithfulness in prayer (Rom. 1:9-10; 12:12). Faithfulness in giving (2 Cor. 8:7-11; 9:6-8). Faithfulness in knowing and teaching the word of God (2 Tim. 2:15). These are a small sample of some of the ways we manifest faithfulness to God.
God has been and will always be faithful. Have you been faithful to God?
