Cobras cruise to holiday hoops tourney title
The Industrial Cobras used the holidays to their advantage, winning the Luling Holiday Classic while putting together a six-game win streak.
In pool play, Industrial defeated Flatonia, 58-44; beat Luling, 51-39; and beat Hondo, 63-44, to reach the tournament final. The Cobras were declared the winner when their opponent forfeited the championship game.
On Dec. 30, the Cobras defeated East Bernard, 43-38, as Jake Alexander scored 20 points and Braedyn Vanduren-Fuller had seven points.
Yoakum snapped Industrial’s win streak on Friday with a 44-43 overtime win over the Cobras in Vanderbilt.
Yoakum senior post Gage Harrison scored 20, including seven points in overtime, as the Bulldogs moved a half-game ahead in the District 25-3A standings with the win. Alexander scored 25 in the loss and Gi’Ziah Lopez added 12.
“It was a tough game, and a hard loss in OT,” Industrial coach Andrey Vanduren said.
The Cobras hosted Hallettsville on Tuesday in 25-3A action, then travel to Edna for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff Friday.
Industrial Girls
The Industrial Cobras picked up three wins over the holidays, including a District 25-3A win over Yoakum in girls’ action.
The Cobras (17-10, 3-2) defeated Yoakum, 46-32, on Friday to improve to 3-2 in district play.
Industrial participated in the Wimberley Holiday Hoopfest on Dec. 27-28, beating Liberal Arts & Sciences Academy – Austin, 53-31, and beating the Sunbury Jets, an Australian team, 47-39 on Dec. 27. The Cobras lost to Class 4A No. 20 Wimberley, 82-22, and to Hutto, 73-21, on Dec. 28.
The Cobras hosted Hallettsville on Tuesday, then travel to Edna on Friday for a 6:15 p.m. showdown to close the first half of district.
Ganado Maidens
Senior post Isabel Tristan scored nine of her teamhigh 13 points in the third quarter as Ganado defeated Bloomington, 55-29, Friday in District 28-2A girls’ action.
The Maidens, who improved to 6-15 overall and 2-2 in district, pushed out to a 9-2 lead, then put the game away by scoring 20 points in both the second and third quarters.
Paisley Hajovsky scored 11 points and Zoey Ybarra added nine for Ganado.
On Dec. 30, the Maidens got off to an ice-cold start but fought back to nearly beat Schulenburg, losing 42-32.
The Shorthorns outscored Ganado 14-2 in the first quarter, but the Maidens got rolling after that as Ybarra scored six of her team-leading 13 points in the second quarter. The Maidens played even with Schulenburg after the first quarter, but they couldn’t make up enough ground to win.
Earlier, the Maidens participated in the Palacios Tournament on Dec. 27-28 to finish out the non-district portion of their schedule.
On Dec. 27, Ganado lost to Palacios, 49-36, and lost to No. 17 McMullen County, 53-32. The following day, they lost to Danbury, 49-26, and to Boling, 4439.
The Maidens hosted Shiner on Tuesday, then travel to Flatonia on Friday for a 6:15 p.m. tipoff to end the first half of district.
Ganado Indians
The Ganado boys lost to Rice Consolidated during the holiday break, 70-52.
No other information was available or reported.
On Tuesday, the Indians hosted Shiner, and the team will travel to Flatonia for a 7:30 p.m. district game on Friday.
Edna Cowgirls
The Edna Cowgirls defeated Palacios and Rice Consolidated to keep pace in the District 25-3A girls race, and also added a pair of holiday tournament wins.
The Cowgirls (18-7, 3-2) beat Palacios on the road, 61-48, on Dec. 20, then cruised by Rice Consolidated, 65-24, on Friday in a pair of district games.
Edna competed in the Weimar Tournament after Christmas, defeating Sacred Heart, 60-31, but losing in double-overtime to Weimar, 86-81, on Dec. 26. The following day, the Cowgirls evened the score with a 72-47 win over Weimar, but they lost, 79-50, to LaGrange to finish the tournament at 2-2.
The Cowgirls traveled to Yoakum for a district game on Tuesday, then will host rival Industrial in a district showdown at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
Edna Cowboys
The Edna Cowboys capped their brief non-district schedule with a 52-50 win over Victoria West on Dec. 30 The Cowboys (5-2, 2-0) also competed in the Mike Smith Classic in Victoria, going 2-2 in the two-day event. On Dec. 27, Edna lost to Seguin, 55-47, then defeated King, 57-54. The following day, the Cowboys lost to Aransas Pass, 74-59, but bounced back to down Taft, 63-45.
Edna played at Yoakum on Tuesday, then returns home to host Industrial in a district showdown at 7:30 p.m.
District 25-3A (as of Jan. 5)
In the girls’ standings, the Tidehaven Tigerettes (24-1, 4-1) held the lead in the District 25-3A race after Friday’s round of games.
Tied for second at 3-2 were Edna, Industrial, Hallettsville (7-13), Columbus (14-6) and Palacios (13-10), followed by Yoakum (8-13) at 1-4 and Rice Consolidated (1-19) at 0-5.
On the boys’ side, Columbus (3-0, 3-0) held a half-game lead over Edna (5-2, 2-0) and Rice Consolidated (12-5, 2-0) in the standings, despite a late start due to winning the Class 3A Div. 1 state football championship on Dec. 19. Yoakum (8-6) was in fourth at 2-1, followed by Industrial (15-9) at 1-2, Tidehaven (0-2) at 0-2, Hallettsville (5-15) at 0-2, and Palacios (10-14) at 0-3.
This week’s Tuesday games included Rice Consolidated at Columbus; Industrial at Hallettsville; Yoakum at Edna; and Palacios at Tidehaven. Friday’s games include Industrial at Edna; Rice Consolidated at Tidehaven; and Palacios at Hallettsville.
District 28-2A (as of Jan. 5)
Flatonia (17-4, 4-0) led the girls district standings going into Tuesday’s games, followed by Shiner (13-8) and Weimar (14-9) tied at 3-1; Ganado (6-15) and Schulenburg (13-8) tied at 2-2; Bloomington (3-18) at 1-3; and Louise (3-17) at 0-5.
In the boys’ race, Shiner (4-2) led at 3-0, followed by Weimar (10-7) at 2-1, Bloomington (2-11) and Flatonia (9-11) tied at 1-1, Schulenburg (3-7) at 0-1, and Louise (0-15) at 0-3. The Ganado boys did not start their season until after Dec. 19, when they won the Class 2A Div. 1 state football championship. The Indians were scheduled to play Bloomington on Friday but no score has been reported or posted.
This week’s Tuesday games included Flatonia at Weimar; Shiner at Ganado; and Bloomington at Schulenburg. Friday’s games include Ganado at Flatonia; Schulenburg at Shiner; and Weimar at Louise.
