Note: This week’s basketball roundup does not include games played on Fri., Dec. 20, due to early press deadlines for the Christmas holiday.
Industrial Girls
Deziree Evans and Kyler Caskey combined for 28 points as the Industrial Cobras rolled by Rice Consolidated, 60-20, Tuesday in District 25-3A girls play.
The Cobras (14-6, 2-1) opened the game with a 17-2 run to take the lead.
They shared the ball well, dishing out eight assists in the period and outscoring Rice 19-4 in the first quarter. They widened the margin to 35-10 by halftime.
Industrial shot 60 percent from the field and controlled the boards with 43 rebounds, as well as 12 steals and five blocked shots.
Evans scored 15 points, Caskey had 13, Cecilia Jalufka had eight, and Karli Stanush added seven points with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Cobras traveled to Tidehaven Friday for another district game and will play in the Wimberley Holiday Hoopfest on Dec.
27-28.
Edna Cowgirls
Keira Santellana and Bella Plotini each posted double-doubles as the Edna Cowgirls defeated Hallettsville, 59-46, Tuesday night in District 25-3A girls action.
It was the Cowgirls’ first win in district after opening 0-2. They improved to 15-5 on the season.
Santellana scored 19 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, while Plotini scored 14 points with 10 rebounds and five assists.
Shanti Guerra added 16 points with four rebounds and six steals.
Edna traveled to district leader Palacios on Friday and will play in the Weimar Tournament on Dec.
26-27.
Ganado Maidens
The Weimar Wildcats pulled away from the Ganado Maidens in the second quarter to post a 41-26 win Tuesday in District 28-2A girls action.
Ganado was within striking distance, trailing 11-9, at the end of the first quarter, but the Wildcats outscored them 25-11 over the next two quarters to put the game away.
Paisley Hajovsky led the Maidens with nine points, Anna Thedford scored six, Zoey Ybarra added five, Isabel Tristan had four, and Michaela Estrada added two.
Ganado canceled its game against Moulton, due to the state football championship in Arlington the day before. The Maidens return to action on Dec. 27 at the Palacios Tournament.
Industrial Boys
Despite double-figure scoring from Jake Alexander and Gi’Ziah Lopez, the Industrial Cobras dropped a tough District 25-3A game, 59-51, Tuesday night at home to Rice Consolidated.
Lopez led the Cobras with 15 points, Alexander scored 14, and Holden McMullen added seven.
The game stayed close until the fourth quarter, when Rice outscored Industrial 14-9 to end the game.
Coach Andrey Vanduren said that rebounding hurt Tuesday night.
“They beat us to all of the 50-50 balls, and they hammered us on the boards,” Vanduren said.
The Cobras traveled to Tidehaven Friday for a district game and will play in the Luling Tournament on Dec. 26-27.
District Standings
In District 25-3A, girls scores from Tuesday are Columbus 55, Tidehaven 46; Palacios 44, Yoakum 37; Industrial 60, Rice Consolidated 20; and Edna 59, Hallettsville 46.
Going into Friday’s games, Palacios (10-7) was in first place at 3-0 in district, followed by Industrial, Columbus (12-5), and Tidehaven at 2-1 (18-1). Hallettsville (3-10) was next at 1-1, followed by Edna (14-5) at 1-2, Rice (1-12) at 0-2, and Yoakum at 0-3 (7-10).
The score of the Hallettsville- Rice game on Dec.
10 has not been reported to MaxPreps.
Only two boys games were played Tuesday, the opening night of district play in 25-3A, due to the football playoffs. Rice Consolidated defeated Industrial 59-51, and Yoakum beat Palacios 52-33. Columbus played Thursday in the Class 3A Division 1 state football championship game, while Edna’s game against Hallettsville on Tuesday was moved to Thursday to allow two more days of practice after Edna lost in football to Columbus on Dec. 12.
After two games, Flatonia leads the District 282A girls standings at 2-0, followed by Shiner and Weimar at 1-0, Ganado and Schulenburg at 1-1, and Louise and Bloomington at 0-2.
Tuesday’s scores included Schulenburg 57, Louise 35; Flatonia 76, Bloomington 11; and Weimar 41, Ganado 28. Prior to that, Louise beat Bloomington 36-35 on Dec. 12.
On Dec. 10, Ganado beat Louise 46-27, Shiner beat Bloomington 66-23, and Flatonia beat Schulenburg 57-21.
The boys began district play in 28-2A on Friday with Louise (0-12) at Bloomington (1-8) and Weimar (7-6) at Schulenburg (3-5). Ganado will begin its season after Christmas due to playing for a Class 2A, Div. 1 state football championship on Thursday.
