A 32-year-old man who reportedly fired a rifle at law enforcement on Friday was sent via helicopter to Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.
Around 7:15 a.m. on Friday, December 29, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a report of a subject walking around Vanderbilt carrying a rifle. The suspect, identified as Martin Lugo, Jr., was not found at the original location, leading deputies to begin searching for him. A post by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office stated the subject was “known to law enforcement” and had warrants for his arrest.
At approximately 7:35 a.m., deputies made contact with the subject at a secondary location near the intersection of Caranchaua and Third Streets in Vanderbilt.
According to reports, Lugo fired and officers fired back, wounding Lugo at least twice.
Lugo was reported to have multiple gunshot wounds, one in the lower abdomen and one in his femoral artery. He was stabilized by Jackson County EMS and transported to an area hospital via PHI medical helicopter.
According to the Sheriff’s Office Facebook update, no officers were injured in the incident.
