What’s Cooking, Katherine?

What’s Cooking, Katherine?

An Irish comedian joked, “I have the body of an 18-year-old. I keep it in the fridge.”

This gave me a good chuckle, especially because as I read it, I had a 24-hour juice cleanse from Pressed chilling in my refrigerator. I hoped the body of an 18-year-old waited for me in those bottles…it wasn’t, BUT a reminder I definitely needed was floating in there.

It was a great pause after a holiday season filled with indulgence. I like to blame my rich diet on the holidays, but the truth is I seem to live my life going from one event to the next, and they all seem to revolve around food and drinks.

There’s ALWAYS a quick meet-up with friends over sips and snacks, a dinner, a dinner party, a celebration, a jaunt to the city, a shopping excursion, a quick weekend and/or a vacation on the horizon. Sometimes stringing three days of good food choices seems impossible. That is what made this one-day juice cleanse feel like such a great idea. I can do almost ANYTHING for a day, even drink only juice.

I was actually doing a little shopping in Houston’s Rice Village and was walking to D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe for a leisurely dinner when I happened upon Pressed Juicery. There was a sign advertising their One Day Reset outside and my interest was piqued. I popped in and after a short conversation with the resident juicer I decided it was just what I needed.

I was a little concerned I might get hangry during my restart, but the juice guru assured me in the unlikely event of hunger I could have a handful of almonds or a few slices of cucumber tossed in lemon to tide me over until my next drink. If you have read this column for any length of time you know I take my food seriously so I nodded earnestly, but remained unconvinced yet undeterred.

My reset consisted of six individual juices that I drank at 8 am, 10 am, noon, 3 pm, 7 pm and 9 pm. The 10, noon, 3 and 9 o’clock juices were each followed by vitamin “shots,” which I intend to continue each day for a week following the hard reset day. I also drank two litres of water in addition to the juices.

The juices ranged from sweet to savory to spicy to hearty to light, and all were tasty and satisfying in their own way. I did need a little cucumber snack to pick me up around 5 in the evening but all in all I felt full and surprisingly full of energy.

Drinking the juice made me feel healthy and was as much a mental reset as it was physical. Sometimes I get lulled into ordering and shopping for food without much thought beyond what sounds the tastiest and this one day pause made me more mindful of what I use to fuel my body.

If you are interested in purchasing the One Day Reset from Pressed the entire regime is only $70 and is packaged to be super easy. If you want to save yourself a trip to Houston and save some money I do think you could easily accomplish the same thing by making juice at home, all you need are juices to mix and/or a blender. I plan to make a one-day reset part of my monthly routine in 2025, if you would like to join me you can kick start that using these quick easy juices, one for a gut cleanse juice and a healthy green juice

Green Juice

• 1 c spinach, a generous measure

• 4 large stalks of celery, strings removed and chopped

• 1/2 large English cucumber, peeled and chopped

• 1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled

• 1 small lemon, peeled and chopped

• 1 c pineapple, peeled and chopped

• 1 medium green apple, partially peeled and chopped

• 1 c cold water Blend the chopped fruit, vegetables and water until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass filtering it thru a cheese cloth of fine mesh sieve and enjoy!

Gut Cleanse Juice

• ½ c unsweetened apple juice

• 2 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tsp ginger juice

• ½ c hot water Mix all the ingredients and drink on an empty stomach first thing in the morning.
