After a loss Tuesday to Hallettsville, the Edna Cowgirls bounced back with a convincing 64-47 win Friday over Palacios.
Senior Shanti Guerra scored 24 points with nine rebounds and five assists, junior Keira Santellana nearly had a triple-double, scoring 21 points with eight rebounds and nine steals, and senior Bella Plotini added 14 points, six rebounds and four steals as the Cowgirls controlled the game Friday.
“We came out with great energy on both sides of the floor and kept it up the whole game,” Coach Dustin Durham said.
The win gives the Cowgirls an edge over Palacios, since they swept the Sharkettes, but are tied with them in the district standings.
On Tuesday, Edna fell behind early by 13 points and battled to trim the lead to four, Durham said, but ran out of gas to pull out the win and lost, 66-47, to Hallettsville.
Santellana posted a double- double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Guerra led the team in scoring with 21 points and six steals.
Guerra is now 33 points away from reaching 2,000 points in her varsity career, Durham said, with regular- season games remaining Tuesday at Rice Consolidated, Friday home against Yoakum, and Tue., Feb. 4 at Industrial.
Edna Cowboys
Despite having two starters out with the flu Friday, the Edna Cowboys rolled past Palacios, 53-37, to remain in a three-way tie for second place in District 25-3A.
Coach Sheldon Moor said that his bench players stepped up to the challenge with point guard Jayfus Smith and wing Kalub Caesar sidelined Friday as the Cowboys posted the 16-point win.
Earlier in the week, the Cowboys beat Hallettsville, 67-54.
The two victories keep Edna in the hunt for a playoff spot. On Friday, Rice Consolidated beat Yoakum, putting the Raiders in first at 8-1, and dropping the Bulldogs into a three-way tie at 7-2 with Edna and Columbus.
Industrial Girls
The Industrial Cobras won their 19th game Monday, defeating Rice Consolidated, 47-22, in girls 25-3A action.
Coach Kathy Anderson said her team came ready to play.
“We had solid play from the starting five, but also solid contributions from the bench, including JV players Allie Farley, Kayleigh Parker, and Lyniah Evans,” Anderson said.
Friday night, the Cobras became the latest team to fall to 30-1 Tidehaven, ranked No. 2 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll. Industrial lost, 46-20, to the Tigerettes, thanks in part to turnovers and to Tidehaven’s hustle and preparation, Anderson said.
Industrial Boys
Second quarter play helped decide the outcome of both games this week for the Industrial Cobras.
Friday night, John Franz buried a pair of three-point shots in the second quarter as the Cobras pulled away from Tidehaven, outscoring the Tigers 15-6, en route to a 47-25 district win.
On Monday, though, Rice Consolidated outscored the Cobras 19-6 in the second quarter to grab a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in a 64-50 win over Industrial.
Turnovers and missed shots hurt, Industrial Coach Andrey Vanduren said, and Rice’s Deveron Bennett and D’Neriyan Fuller combined for 13 of the Raiders’ 19 points that quarter.
Outside of that stretch, the Cobras played Rice within a point.
Jake Alexander led the team with 27 points and Gi’Ziah Lopez added 11 in the loss.
Friday, though, was a different story as Industrial’s defensive pressure held the Tigers to single digits in all but the fourth quarter.
“It was a total team effort from start to finish,” Vanduren said. “Our young guys played well, and John Franz hit some big threes early to create the separation we needed.”
Alexander scored 14 points, Franz scored 11, and Lopez had 10 as seven Cobras scored and all 11 played.
