Texana Fellowship and Vanderbilt Baptist Church hosted a joint junior high and high school Christian weekend retreat, Mid Winter, in Edna from Friday, January 10-Sunday, January 12, 2025.
Sixty-two campers from Industrial and Edna schools along with home school students and over 40 adult volunteers came together for worship, speaker-led sessions, small group discussion and bible study, fellowship, recreation, meals, and service. The theme of the weekend was, “I am Clay.”
We had two speakers, Friday night Tyler Dingle, Youth Pastor at First Baptist Church Cuero joined us. The speaker for Saturday and Sunday was Mat Yelvington from Houston and his messages were about how we are clay. The first message is that we are clay because we were made by God, we have value and we don’t have the right to object to the potter’s work and ways. The second message was how Jesus brings healing to our lives and Matt shared the story about bringing healing by clay to a blind man’s eyes.
The worship band was a Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) band from Houston Christian University. Worship, meals, and recreation took place at Brackenridge Recreation Complex at the Historic Texana Church and the Marina. Some of the campers lodged at Texana Park while a number of local families hosted many youth at their homes for the weekend. The youth also participated in three Saturday service projects. One group went to Helping Hands to sort and organize items for local families in need. One group visited Southbrooke Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and played bingo with the residents.
Meanwhile, a third group delivered lunch to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. These two small local churches collaborated for a powerful weekend of Christian community!
