Cowgirls take tough win over Cobras, 50-47, in 25-3A finale

The Edna Cowgirls booked themselves a playoff spot with a 50-47 win over the Industrial Cobras Tuesday night in the District 25-3A finale.

Edna played Goliad at St. Joseph in Victoria at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Bi-District. The winner of that game will play the winner between Crystal City (19-9) and Young Women’s Leadership Academy (5-23) in the Area round.

The Cowgirls (24-10, 9-5) finished tied for third with Hallettsville, with whom they split games during the district season. They enter the Class 3A Division I playoffs as the runner up from the district, with Columbus (22-8, 10-4) as the top big school from 25-3A, while Tidehaven (32-2, 12-2) won 253A outright and entered the Division II playoffs as the top district representative, with Hallettsville (14-16, 9-5) as the district’s small school runner up.

Coach Dustin Durham said he was pleased with how his team handled the atmosphere in the Cobra Gym.

“I was proud of the way our girls battled,” Durham said. “It was an extremely tough environment against a good Industrial team, and our girls found a way to make plays when we really needed them.”

Senior Shanti Guerra led the Cowgirls with 27 points, while Cobra senior Deziree Evans paced Industrial with 27 points.

The loss was a tough one for Industrial (21-14), which finished tied for fifth with Palacios (17-15) at 7-7.

“We needed a W to have a chance at the playoffs, but we just didn’t get it done,” Industrial Coach Kathy Anderson said. “The girls played hard and never gave up, but it just wasn’t enough in the end.

“While I am disappointed that we didn’t advance, I’m proud of the effort they gave this season. Our district is really tough. Any team could beat any other team on any given night, which our collective district record shows. We wish the advancing teams the best.”

Also on Tuesday, Tidehaven beat Rice Consolidated, 35-21; Columbus beat Yoakum, 48-34; and Hallettsville beat Palacios, 44-30.

Other Bi-District games include Columbus vs. Nixon-Smiley on Monday; Tidehaven vs. Stockdale at 6 p.m. Monday at Victoria West; and Hallettsville vs. Poth at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph, prior to the Edna game.
