The Humility of God & Christ

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2, ESV)

Humility is an important but elusive virtue. We noted last week that without humility we cannot have a proper relationship with God or with others (Prov. 22:4; Jas. 4:10). Why is that? Where can we find a good model of what humility looks like? Humility is another one of those virtutes that is rooted in the nature and character of God Himself. God, who is the Creator and Sustainer of all things, is pictured as being greater than all things and in need of nothing (Ps. 113:5-6; Acts 17:24-25). And yet, He humbles Himself to take notice of the people and things He has created. God cares for all people, even the poor and lowly (Ps. 113:4-9; 138:6-7; 18:35). How often have we considered that this virtue in God is one of the motivations we have to plead with Him in prayer (1 Pet. 5:5-7)?

But then in Jesus Christ, God exhibits not only His humility, but also a blueprint for our own humble walk with Him. Jesus exhibits humility from the cradle to the cross (Phil. 2:5-8). In His great invitation, notice how He describes Himself (Matt. 11:25-29). He is gentle or meek and lowly or humble in heart. His humility is encouragement to all to come and know God.

Jesus, as God, demonstrated His humility by taking on flesh to serve humanity (Matt. 20:28; Mark 10:45; Luke 22:27). We see it at Gethsemane, where He prayed that the Father’s will be done (Luke 22:40-46). We see it on the cross, where He stooped to serve and save all humanity, even those who were His enemies (Phil. 2:6-8; Rom. 5:6-8). Scripture encourages us to cultivate the humility Christ modeled (Phil. 2:3-5). Are you humble like Jesus?
