Shelby Park restrooms, concession stand nearing completion

Opening Day is almost here for the new Shelby Park combination concession stand-restroom.

Edna City Manager Gary Broz told councilmembers during Thursday night’s meeting that the restrooms are ready for use and that the Edna Little League plans to move equipment into the new concession stand this week.

The previous concession stand and restrooms were damaged beyond repair by severe weather in late September 2023. The city moved temporary restrooms in for last season’s Little League and high school baseball and softball games while the new facility could be designed and built.

At this point, the city is putting up a pipe fence around the facility, doing some drainage work, and completing the project’s punch list, Broz said “If they were having high school baseball this week, the restrooms would be functional,” Broz said. “We’re moving. We’ve got a lot of little things to do, but we’re moving.

The project has cost approximately $325,000, much of it from donations, grants, and a cost-sharing agreement with Edna ISD.

Councilmembers also held the second reading of an ordinance that would call for a general election on Sat., May 3, for the offices of Mayor and Precinct 1 and Precinct 2 councilmembers. However, the three incumbents – Mayor Lance Smiga, Precinct 1 councilmember Cippi Palacios, and Precinct 2 councilmember Katrina Callis – are unopposed, so the city will cancel the election at an upcoming council meeting.

In other business, the council: Approved the minutes of the Feb. 6 meeting; Tabled a proclamation declaring April to be Child Abuse Awareness Month as requested by the Golden Crescent Children’s Project; Approved payment of city bills; and Heard staff reports.
