The Edna ISD Board of Trustees will meet Thursday morning in a special executive session to interview a candidate for its now vacant position of athletic director and head football coach.
Former AD and football coach Jimmie Mitchell has stepped down from his leadership role over the district’s athletic program after five seasons in charge.
Mitchell led the Cowboys football team to a 6-6 record and the Class 3A Div. 1 regional round in his first season, then coached the team to three consecutive state semifinal games, going 34-8 in that span.
“Coach Mitchell has
see EDNA AD/COACH INTERVIEW on page A14 done a really great job for us,” Edna ISD Superintendent Robert O’Connor said Friday, opting not to discuss personnel issues publicly. “It’s unfortunate what led to all of this, but we are where we are now is the only thing I can say. We’re going to move forward to get it done.”
He also chose not to divulge any information about the candidate to be interviewed, other than to say that the person is not on the Edna staff.
“It’s not an in-house candidate, but I don’t want to say anything about who it is yet because they haven’t done anything on their end,” O’Connor said. “Until Thursday morning, it’s not anything official, but I can tell you for sure it’s an outside candidate.
“They’re going to come in on Thursday, meet the (school) board, and do their interview and hopefully make their deal from there. Then we’ll release it all out. You can’t hardly do it anymore, but I like for people to be able to go back and tell their own people and their own kids. The word beats you to the house.”
