Missy Klimitchek, Industrial ISD curriculum director, opened the board’s eyes to a change in personnel safety protocol on all campuses when the board met on April 19. The changes stemmed from conversations among administration about new training for all teachers and substitute teachers to combat the what-ifs that could happen due to Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook school shootings.
“The rules we have are outdated and ineffective, and not everyone has been trained in the same way to deal with what we don’t want to think about,” Klimitchek said. “Some of our teachers and substitutes may not even know the current rules.”
She said Industrial school teachers needed to be provided with solid training, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department would be willing to train them in the ALICE Training Institute way.
ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. Officer Jeremy Crull and his father, Officer Lance Crull of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, were on hand to present ALICE and its benefits to the board.
