Edna Swears in New Police Chief
By John Meng, Managing Editor In a chilly New Year’s Day ceremony, City of Edna Mayor Lance Smiga swore in Rick Boone as the new Edna police chief. A large crowd of family, friends, county and city officials and Edna police officers were on hand to welcome and congratulate the new chief.
“I’m excited,” said Smiga, after the ceremony. “Change can be good thing and I think we’ll see some positive changes in the department.”
Boone appears to be uniquely qualified for the position. He previously worked as chief deputy at the Jackson County Sheriffs Office and was employeed at the Sheriffs Office for 26 years. He is also a resident of Edna and has served on the Edna city council.
In addition to Chief Boone, the city swore in three new police officers – Derrick Bermea, Lance Crull and Jeremy Crull. Both Lance and Jeremy Crull worked previously with Jackson County Sheriffs Office and Bermea was a peace officer in Port Lavaca.
