Sklar named to SHSU Board of Directors
The Sam Houston State University Alumni Association has announced the election of Shane Sklar to its board of directors, effective January 1, 2023, for a three-year term.
Sklar, a fourth-generation farmer and rancher from Edna, Texas, is the owner of El Toro Farms, which specializes in cotton and corn production. Sklar and his father, Darrell, own Sklar & Son Cattle, a cow/calf operation and Sklar Seed, a grain sorghum, soybean and corn seed sales company.
Sklar’s professional background includes previously serving as an agriculture aide and field representative for United States Congressman Chet Edwards. He has also served as executive director of the Independent Cattlemen’s Association of Texas where he earned the 2003 Professional Ag Workers “Young Agriculturist of the Year” award. Since graduating from SHSU in 1999 with a degree in agricultural business, Sklar has remained connected to his alma mater. To help support SHSU ag students, he created a collegiate SHSU chapter of the Independent Cattlemen's Association of Texas, leading to several
student internships for Bearkats. Sklar is also a Lifetime Member of the SHSU Alumni Association.
SHSU board members are involved in many initiatives during their appointment. In addition to attending events and participating on committees, they frequently assist the university and the Alumni Association in identifying, cultivating, and involving alumni in areas such as student recruitment, mentoring and networking, job placement, legislative advocacy, scholarship donation and financial support.
