A former educator, pianist, and rancher, Paulette McElveen of Ganado feels as though she’s had a blessed life.
She recalls the enjoyment of teaching at George Washington Carver school in Edna.
“I taught in Edna. Starting in 1973, when kindergarten first came,” she said. “I received $300 from the state to establish a classroom. There was no curriculum or no guidance as to what you needed to teach. We planned our own curriculum.”
When schools advanced to educational technology, she had a decision to make.
“I have a Master's Degree in Special Education, certifications, and education beyond that. I have my principal certification, but wanted to stay in the classroom. I worked 42 years in education and realized I aged out. It was time to step aside.”
