The Rice Consolidated Raiders defeated the Industrial Cobras 42-14 on Friday night in Altair, but the game was much closer than the score indicates.
The Raider opened the game quickly with a 64 yard touchdown pass on the third play from scrimmage, but the rest of the first quarter was a defensive battle.
Halfway through the second quarter, Rice put together a 69 yard drive to take a 13-0 lead.
With the clock running down in the second quarter, the Raider switched to a no-huddle offense and put together another 69 yard drive that gave them a 21-0 halftime lead.
All through the first half, Industrial put together good drives, but never could punch the ball into the endzone.
Halfway through the second quarter, Rice put together a 48 yard drive, and aided by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, they took a 28-0 lead.
In the first half, the Cobras drives stalled but penalties and turnover changed the course of the second half.
Derrick Cann fielded the following kickoff at the Cobras 15 yard line and picked up 35 yards to move the ball to midfield and really spark the Cobras offense. After a couple of first downs, Karston Wimberly broke free up the middle on a 19 yard quarterback keeper to finally get the Cobras on the board, trailing 28-6.
Rice put together one more offensive drive and on the first play of the fourth quarter, took a 35-6 lead.
After stopping the Raiders on their following drive, the Cobras once again put together a good drive but an interception at the Rice 8 yard line was returned 92 yards, and the Raiders extended their lead to 42-6.
The Cobras got another drive going, but it was once again stopped by an interception. The Raiders were unable to do anything on their drive and returned the ball to the Cobras with just over a minute left in the game.
Wimberly connected with Collin Long on a 44 yard pass that moved the ball to the one yard line and Wimberly then snuck the ball in for the Cobras second touchdown of the night. After a successful two point conversion, the Cobras had cut the lead to 42-14.
With only 10 seconds left in the game, the Cobras were successful on an onside kick and decided to take a couple of shots at the endzone.
Wimberly put a perfect touch on the ball and Long had a step on the defensive back, but a blatant hold on Long at the seven yard line wasn't called, and the game ended with Rice winning 42-14.
