The Hallettsville Brahmas entered Friday night's game against the Industrial Cobras as the no. six ranked team in 3A. The Cobras held their own and if not for some costly turnovers, the outcome could've changed drastically. Eventually though, Hallettsville pulled away in the fourth quarter and won 47-14.
Since district play started, the Cobras downfall has been turnovers and the inability to score in the redzone. On the opening offensive play, the Cobras lost the handle on the ball and it landed right in a Brahma defensive back's hands and he ran it in for a touchdown to take a quick 7-0 lead.
After receiving the second kickoff, Industrial showed that they came to the game ready to put up a fight and drove the ball 77 yards behind some tough running by running backs Blayne Moreland and Michael Williams and quarterback Karston Wimberly and tied the score at 7. Williams finished off the drive with a 17 yard touchdown run.
Moreland carried the ball mainly up the middle and dragged Brahmas with him as he went. “It’s the mindset every game, trying to win the ball game for the team and try to help my brothers get to the playoff and hopefully go to state,” Moreland said. “I don’t feel it when I am in the game and the other team is pounding on me.”
Later in the first quarter, the Cobras had the Brahmas facing a 4th and 15 from the Cobra 19 yard line but a receiver slipped past the defense and caught the touchdown pass that put Hallettsville up 13-7.
For the rest of the first half the Cobras drove the ball but their drives kept stalling in the red zone. Hallettsville was also unable to get anything past a stout Cobras defense and the score at halftime was 13-7, Hallettsville.
The Brahmas got the ball to start the second half and once again scored on the first play. This time a pass in the backfield was completed with two Cobras attempting to make a tackle but the receiver spun away and then broke free for a 55 yard run. After a successful two point conversion Hallettsville lead 21 to 7.
