Cowboys advance on to Regionals

When the Edna Cowboys took the field for the second half of their Area playoff game against the Lyford Bulldogs, they already had the game in hand, holding a 31-0 lead and dominating in every aspect of the game. The Cowboys rotated in some of the guys who haven’t played a lot in the second half and tried to eat up the game clock and walked away with a 45-7 victory.
When the game started, Edna’s defense showed that they came out ready to play, forcing Lyford to punt after they gained only four yards. Edna’s offense looked like it was going to start off slow as well, but junior Kenny Haynes broke off a 27-yard run on a fake punt that set the tone for himself, the offense, and the rest of the game. Freshman Santiago Villanueva hit a 22-yard field goal that finished the drive, and gave the Cowboys a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Reese Orsak recovered a fumble on the next Lyford drive and this time Haynes ran over the Lyford linebacker and broke free for a 41-yard touchdown run that gave Edna a 10-0 lead they carried to the second quarter.
In the second quarter, senior quarterback Thomas Long found Haynes open along the right sideline and it looked like he would get his second touchdown of the night, but the Lyford safety popped the ball out of Haynes’ hand and Lyford got the ball back. They could do nothing with it, however, and the Cowboys went right back to work.
This time sophomore Javonte Seymore picked up 22 yards on the ground, and on the next play Haynes broke free again, this time with a 25 yard touchdown run that gave the Cowboys a 17-0 lead.
