Ethel Marion Powell
Ethel Marion Powell passed away on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. She was born Sept. 25, 1926 at Fordtran in Lavaca County to James Marshall and Emma Jackson Hart, of Hope. Her childhood and school years were spent in Lavaca County. She enjoyed fishing with her brothers Andy, Buddy, Clarence and Johnny Hart in the countryside. In 1943, she wed William A Cockroft of Yoakum. They were parents to two sons, William David (1944-1993) [Martha] and James Edward [Kathryn] Cockroft. Sadly, she was widowed due to WWII injuries sustained during William’s duty in U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1947, she wed again to John Wesley Powell of Sherman. (1923-2011). Together they added eight more children to her family: John Roy (1948-2008) [Elizabeth], Raymond Wesley [Theresa], Vera Ellen (1950-2014) [Paul], Kenneth Wayne (1951-2017) [Margaret], Tony Lee [Pam], Shirley Rose [Ken], Clyde Barry [Deb] and Lisa Ann [David]. Her arms knew no limits when it came to sharing hugs and kisses. She spent many happy hours fishing with her many grandkids. She was always ready to feed a crowd and was a wonderful cook. As her children were growing, she always welcomed their friends to the dinner table. Her generous spirit welcomed all and her spiritual beliefs comforted all. Marion was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and a great-great-great-grandmother with a heart big enough to love each and everyone of her extended family. Holidays and gatherings were the highlights of the years for her. Her 91 years on this Lord’s earth were a blessing to each of her family members. She will be missed but the memories will be cherished. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the Ganado Funeral Home. Funeral service is at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 24 at First Baptist Church in Ganado. Funeral services have been entrusted into the care Russell Todish of the Ganado Funeral Home, 361-771-2120.
