"I know you were part of my breakfast crew, but I'm gonna let these rescue people take you because we don’t have anywhere to have breakfast anymore, baby."
G.W. Burt stood hunched over a large dog crate, surrounded by the rubble that used to be his home, and dogs as far as the eye could see.
The LaWard home he shared with his wife, Patricia and the nearly 100 dogs they cared for burned to the ground on Sept. 22. Nothing was salvageable, and although the Burts were not at home, four dogs lost their lives in the blaze.
Owning 100 dogs isn’t something that happened overnight, Mr. Burt says. Nor is it something that happened intentionally, but between dogs being dumped over the fence and them multiplying faster than the family could get then spayed and neutered, they did their best to feed them all, to the tune of $400 a week.
