Cowboys make a statement

Over the summer, district 14 was named the toughest district in 3A-D1. A Dave Campbell’s writer said in his pre-season prediction that Goliad and Yoakum were both state champion quality teams and that the Edna Cowboys were “Laying in the weeds, possibly being overlooked.”
After hanging in the top 10 ranking all season, the Cowboys made a major statement by defeating the Goliad Tigers 17-7 on Friday night.
Goliad was blowing away the competition at the beginning of the season, carrying a number one state ranking before they were upset 21-20 by Shiner (who is now ranked number 2 in 2A-D1). Since then, the tigers had climbed back into the top ten, above both Yoakum and Edna, and were sitting at number three before facing the Cowboys.
The last time the Cowboys and the Tigers met, in the Regional playoff round, Goliad ran away with a 57-31 victory. This time, the Cowboys controlled the clock and kept the ball out of the hands of the potent Tiger offense.
With both sides of the stadium overfilled with a vocal and rowdy crowd, the game everyone had been waiting for all season got underway.
