An artist with local roots will be featured at an exhibit at the Nave Museum in Victoria on Thursday, Jan. 17.

McHenry “Dub” Lee II is the son of Dr. Mac and Carol Ann Lee of Edna. He graduated from Edna High School in 1991.

Dub said he was first exposed to painting as a child when he would watch his grandmother, Kathryn Lee, paint. He said it was her hobby and he would sit and watch her.

“I loved the smell of linseed oil and the glistening paint on the canvas,” he said. “She was very talented, but then when I was 10 years old she suddenly stopped.”

He said painting was something she had only done for a short while and after she stopped, she never started again.

Dub said he rediscovered painting as an adult when he bought his first house.

“I needed something for my walls and decided to paint some pictures,” he said. “I found I loved it. I painted in the evenings and on weekends and it was very relaxing. There was no pressure.”

Soon he realized he had become more serious about his art. It became more stressful because he wanted to do better.
