Hospital warehouse burns

    A warehouse owned by the Jackson County Hospital District has been deemed a total loss and surrounding structures have suffered damage after a fire on June 24. No one was injured.

    According to Chief Kelly Janica, the EDS 3 Fire Department was alerted at 9:07 p.m. and arrived on scene at 9:10 p.m.

    Twenty-five firefighters from Edna and surrounding departments used nearly a half million gallons of water to battle the blaze, which took approximately an hour to contain and many hours to extinguish completely.

    The warehouse contained medical records, business records, and some medical equipment. Most of the medical records held in the building were preserved in other places, according to Donna Coleman of the Hospital District.

    The Jackson County Home Health Office and the EMS station both sustained fire, smoke and water damage, and their operations have been temporarily moved into the Jackson County Hospital. Ambulances and vehicles parked on the property were moved and not damaged.

    Janica said that Edna Police, hospital maintenance, Edna public works department and TXDOT “helped immensely” by assisting with equipment and manpower.

    The fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal. No cause had been determined at press time.
