Ernestine Shutt
Ernestine Shutt stepped out of this world and into Glory on July 26, 2021. She was 90.
Ernestine was born August 17, 1930 to Henry and Maggie Lee Norris in Miranda City, Texas. She was welcomed home by her three year old brother Tommy Gene, better known as Ikey. The family moved to Freer, Texas where Henry went to work for Mobil Oil. Ernestine attended school in Freer and graduated from Freer High School in 1947.
She was working at the local movie theater where she met a young man who was in town working in the oil field. In August of 1950 she and J. K. Budd married. The couple spent a year in El Paso while he served in the army. When J.K.’s father suffered a heart attack, they returned to the family farm in Cordele, Texas.
They settled on this farm and raised a family. In 1951 their only daughter Vicky Nann was born. She was later joined by three brothers- Ricky Clyde, Randy Ray and Robby Minor. They rode the school bus thirteen miles into Edna to attend school. And each of the children graduated from Edna High School.
The couple later divorced and Ernestine began work at Carol Ann’s dress shop. As an accomplished seamstress she did alterations for the store as well as sales and purchasing.
In 1973 Ernestine married Weldon Shutt. After a few years living in Houston the couple moved back to Edna. They built a home in the Navidad area. They enjoyed gardening together and landscaping their property. Ernestine loved flowers and always had many potted plants in her greenhouse.
Ernestine loved her Lord. She and Weldon faithfully attended the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Edna for many years. They served as groundskeepers and other positions at the church.
Ernestine was a believer in hard work and straightforward honesty. She enjoyed painting, yard work and collecting birdhouses and records. At age 89 she painted her entire house- just because “it needed it,” she said.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Maggie Norris; former husband J.K. Budd, and husband Weldon Shutt.
She is survived by daughter Vicky Black and husband Gary of Perryton; son Ricky Budd and Linda of Victoria; son Randy Budd of Conroe and son Robby Budd of Edna; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are stepdaughters Sherrie Reed and husband Scott of Hixson, Tennessee; Debbie Huff and husband Jim of Houston; Robin Oakley and husband Don of Cadiz, Kentucky and stepson Bruce Shutt and wife Connie of Montgomery, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In 2021 Ernestine moved to Perryton to be near her daughter. After a brief illness she passed away in Perryton. A memorial celebrating her life will be held Thursday, Sept. 2 at 11 am at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Edna, officiated by Pastor Andrew Schroer.
