McDonald, Powell earn spots at state

Two Jackson County athletes are headed to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association boys state meet, set for March 22-23 in Abilene.
Parker McDonald of Ganado punched his ticket to state by winning the boys 114 pound class at the Region 4 Division 4 meet held at Colmesneil High School on Saturday. McDonald squatted 335 pounds, benched 210 pounds, and deadlifted 340 pounds for a total of 885 pounds.
Kohl Powell of Industrial earned his way to state by finishing second in Division 3 in the boys 275s with a 635-pound squat, 450-pound bench, and 575-pound deadlift, for a total of 1,660 pounds.
Powell will compete in the Division 3 state meet beginning at 4 p.m. on Fri., March 22. McDonald will lift in Division 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Sat., March. 23. The state meet is at the Taylor County Expo Center, 1700 Hwy. 36, Abilene.
Other lifters competing for Ganado, with their lifts, were Cain Hayden, fourth place in the 165 class, 500/270/425 for 1,195 pounds; Juan Almeda, seventh in the 165s, 450/230/445 for 1,125 pounds; and Vincent Barajas, ninth in the 275s, 470/300/390 for 1,160 pounds.
Likewise, other lifters competing for Industrial, with their lifts, were Cameron Medrano, ninth in the 132s, 335/200/330, for 865 pounds; Garret Kolo, seventh in the 198s, 500/300/465 for 1,265 pounds; Jackson Kahanek, sixth in the 242s, 600/350/420 for 1,370 pounds; Zeke Hutsil, ninth in the 242s, 525/300/480 for 1,305 pounds; Kyle Schreoder, 10th in the 242s, 500/315/445 for 1,260 pounds; and Luke Gipson, sixth in the 308s, 460/365/365 for 1,190 pounds.
