Alexia “Lexie” Muschalek
Alexia “Lexie” Muschalek of Edna passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024 at the age of 97. She was born April 2, 1927 in Ganado, Texas to Joe and Millie Surovec. She graduated from high school in 1944 and was married at Assumption Catholic Church on June 15, 1948. Lexie shared 62 wonderful years with Louis, the love of her life. From this union, her three children Debbie, Janice, and Kent were born.
While her children were young, they attended St. Agnes Catholic School where Lexie helped the Cordi Marian Sisters, the teachers through the Diocese of San Antonio, with whatever they needed. She took a special interest in the school carnivals and spent many hours donating her time to help make them fun, creative, and successful. Later when her children were older, she became a working Mom, first, at Moo Moo Milk Store, Zlotnik’s, and then Sears Catalog Center where she stayed for many years until she retired so that she could spend more time with her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly. In addition, not only was she a very good seamstress, making clothes for her children when they were young, she also helped them with clothing alterations and repairs for her grandchildren as they began to arrive. And of course, she spent many hours working in her flower beds, canning, and cooking produce from Louis’s bountiful garden. Lexie loved preparing meals and desserts for her family, always trying new recipes while perfecting old ones. Her children and grandchildren looked forward to going to Mamaw’s because they were sure to get ample amounts of her delicious food. Also, very important to her was volunteering at St. Agnes on Mondays with the counting committee. This was a must as well as her role within the funeral meals ministry. Always busy, Lexie found time to be an active member in the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Theresa #1350, KJZT, and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, and her mother and father, Joe and Millie Surovec.
Lexie is survived by her children Debbie Sklar (IC), Janice Woodring (David), and Kent (Shelly); her sister, Georgia Farris, and her Goddaughter, Brenda Nichols. She had 11 grandchildren: Brittany Rozsypal, Shaye Johnson, Trey Sklar, Jenna Papetti, Eric Woodring, Natalie Farley, Lauren Massey, Travis Muschalek, Jessica Garza,
Cameron Larkin, and Angela Stuart. She also had 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Mamaw always had hugs and kisses for all them, and they loved her very much!
Visitation will be held on October 18 at 9:30 am at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Edna. A rosary will be recited at 10:30 am followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
Rev. Michael Petering will be the officiant and interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna. The burial is under the direction of Slavik’s Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Eric Woodring, Trey Sklar, Travis Muschalek, Zane Johnson, Jerome Rozsypal, P.J. Farley, Clinton Massey, Nicholas Papetti, and Robert Garza.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to Hospice of South Texas at The Dornburg Center and Ganado Nursing and Rehabilitation for their warm, welcoming spirit, kindness, and compassion. A special thank you to Norma Guerra, Lexie’s caregiver, who helped take care of “Momma” for several years.
