Deloris Slay
Deloris Shutt Slay, of Inez, formerly of Sweeny, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 with her daughters by her side. Deloris was 79 years of age. Deloris was born in Vanderbilt, Texas in Koop Settlement on Oct. 22, 1937 to the late John and Lydia Shutt. She graduated from Vanderbilt High School in 1957. She married the love of her life, John Slay, on March 23, 1958. They made a home in Sweeny for many years before moving to Inez in 1982. Deloris was not only a homemaker who loved her family she also stayed active with United Methodist Women both in Sweeny and in Inez. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra Engelmohr and her husband Harry of Ganado, Sharon Kruppa and her husband Brian of El Campo; five grandchildren, Kaylan Beard and friend Rick Dobiyanski, Cody Engelmohr and wife Melinda, Brady Engelmohr and wife Mallory, Casie Kruppa and Clint Kruppa; four great-grandchildren, Cory and Cali Beard, Ella and Syla Engelmohr; sister, Vera Born Rogers of Edna; brothers, Weldon Shutt of Edna, and John Shutt of Stockdale; various nieces, nephews, family members; and Brianna Trevino a close and dear friend who is considered family. Deloris is preceded in death by both parents; loving husband of 57 years, John Slay; and brothers, Harvey, Alfred, and Herbert Shutt. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 14, from 5-7 p.m. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel of Edna. Burial to follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna. Pastor Alex Alvarez will be officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice of South Texas, 605 E. Locust Ave, Victoria, Texas, 77901. Pallbearers will be Cody Engelmohr, Brady Engelmohr, Clint Kruppa, Charles Born, Raymond Born and Clifford Born. Honorary pallbearer is Judge Beverly.
