Luis Mendiola

Luis F. Mendiola, of Edna, Texas, passed away on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at the age of 86. He was born in Benavides, Texas on March 2, 1933, to the late Natividad Mendiola, and Felipa Mendiola.     Luis was a devout Christian and spent his life spreading the word of God. He pastored Baptist Missions in, Hondo, Texas (1967-1970), Sinton, Texas (1970-1972), Richmond, Texas (1972-1975), Pleasanton, Texas (1975-1980), Wichita, Kansas (1980-1985), and Eagle Lake, Texas (1985-1987). Luis’ passion then brought him to Edna where he retired from Mission Bautista in December of 2008.     Luis is survived by his loving wife Viola of 50 years; children, Lydia Contreras and her husband Greg Contreras, Elizabeth Marie Guizar, and John Mark Mendiola; grandchildren, Johnathan Contreras, Megan Contreras, and Andrea Contreras; great-grandchildren, Andre Brady, Charli Contreras, Dalen Starks, O’Quinn Callis, and Tyler Hall.     In addition to his parents, Luis is preceded in death by his sisters, Gloria Alaniz, Lencha Franco, and Janie Cooper.     Visitation was held on Monday, April 1, from 8 to 9 a.m. in the Oaklawn Funeral Home Chapel, with funeral service at 9 a.m., burial followed in the Memory Gardens Cemetery of Edna, with Rev. Roger Rodriguez, from Segunda Iglesia Bautista in Rosenberg and Rev. Robert Krause from First Baptist Church, Edna, officiating.     Pallbearers were Andre Brady, J.D. Contreras, Pablo Santillan Sr., Pablo Santillan Jr., John Mendiola, and Quinn Challis; honorary pallbearers were Greg Contreras and Reynaldo Leal.     In lieu of flowers’ memorials may be made to the First Baptist Youth fund, 309 Cottonwood St. Edna, Tx. 77957 or Hospice of South Texas, 605 Locust Ave. Victoria, Texas 77901.     Arrangements are under the direction of Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna. 361-782-2221.
