With an 10-0 victory to open district play, the Industrial Cobras extended their win streak over the Edna Cowgirls to 10 games. New Cobra Jade Beck lead the way for the Cobras with five runs batted in.
“When I was younger, I played for Industrial’s little leagues, so I’ve actually played with 95% of these girls their whole lives and their whole careers,” Beck said. “We’ve been playing together a long time.”
The game started off promising for the Cowgirls when Raney Orsak reached base on an error and then Elizabeth Alex walked to put two one with one out, but Edna couldn’t push a run across and Industrial came to bat in the bottom of the first looking to get on the board early.
After Alex got two quick outs, Jillian Jones doubled off the left field wall and Alex lost her control. A few batters later, with the bases loaded, Beck walked to bring in a run. Haylee Lonis hit a comebacker off Alex for an infield RBI hit. Then Chloe Darilek and Allie Eschenburg had back to back RBI hit by pitches.
With a 4-0 lead, Lexey Mikulec worked a three up, three down inning to move the game to the bottom of the second, and the Cobra offense once again went to work.
With the bases loaded, Sarah Kusak hit an RBI infield single and Beck followed up with a solid single right back up the middle to score two more Cobra runs. Kusak, the Cobra third baseman last season, was moved off of third by Beck and has shifted to right field.
“My sophomore year, I played outfield,” Kusak said. “Playing outfield or third base, it doesn’t bother me but playing outfield is easier. This was my fourth game back. It is just making the adjustment from one sport to another, and Lexey and Jill have helped me.”
