County Volleyball Teams Busy in Tournament Play
Industrial Cobras
The Cobras (15-10) picked up where they left off their first tournament, rolling to an impressive second place in the Gold Bracket of the Bastrop ISD Classic last weekend, winning six of nine matches while facing much larger schools.
On Thur., Aug. 22, Industrial defeated Class 5A Austin Ann Richards High School, 25-10, 25-15; lost to Class 4A Navarro, 25-15, 14-25, 15-25; then defeated Class 4A La Grange, 25-16, 25-14 on Aug. 22. The following day, Aug. 23, the Cobras beat TAPPS Class 5A Austin St. Michaels Catholic Academy, 17-25, 25-18, 25-10; lost to Class 4A defending state champion and top-ranked San Antonio Davenport, 14-25, 11-25; then defeated Class 6A San Antonio Taft, 25-20, 25-23, to reach the Gold Bracket.
On Aug. 24, the final day of the tournament, Industrial defeated Class 6A Weatherford, 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, and beat Class 5A Lubbock Cooper, 25-22, 25-23 to reach the bracket championship, where they lost a second time to Davenport, 25-15, 12-25, 9-25.
Autumn Kallus and Pacie Roe were named to the All-Tournament Team. Kallus tallied 73 digs, 11 aces, and passed 2.0 on serve receive, while Roe had 33 digs, seven aces, 86 assists, and five blocks.
The Cobras returned to action on Thur., Aug. 29 in the Seguin Tournament, where they beat Class 3A Poth, 25-20, 25-20, and Class 5A Southside, 25-21, 25-17, before losing to Class 5A Medina Valley, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25.
Statistically, against Poth, Karli Stanush had nine kills and two aces; Aerlin Bethany had five kills; Pacie Roe had 11 assists, six digs, and two aces; Kate Simons had seven assists; Deziree Evans and Kaylee Honc had two blocks each; and Autumn Kallus had seven digs. In the Southside game, Stanush had nine kills, one block, and one ace; Honc had seven kills; Roe had 17 assists; Simons had 10 assists; Kayla Osburn had a block; Kallus had 11 digs; and Kylee Swoboda had nine digs and three aces. Against Medina Valley, Stanush recorded 13 kills; Honc had seven kills, one block, and one ace; Roe had 19 assists and two aces; Simons had 15 assists; Evans had two blocks; Kallus had 19 digs; and Desiree Alaniz had 14 digs.
Edna Cowgirls
The Edna Cowgirls (11-13) brought home third place in the Silver Bracket of the Schulenburg Tournament last weekend.
The Cowgirls defeated Gonzales, 25-12, 25-11, to open play on Thur., Aug. 22, then defeated Malakoff Crossroads 25-21, 25-13, but lost to Schulenburg, 23-25, 18-25. Edna beat East Bernard on Fri., Aug. 23, 25-17, 26-24, but lost to fourth-ranked Goliad, a Class 3A regional semifinalist last year, 14-25, 13-25, and to Victoria St. Joseph, 13-25, 20-25. The Cowgirls lost to Flatonia on Sat., Aug. 24, 16-25, 25-19, 11-25, but ended on a high note, defeating East Bernard, 25-16, 26-24, to capture third place.
The Cowgirls returned home to defeat Shiner on Tue., Aug. 27 in non-district play, 29-27, 25-7, 25-21, led by senior Shanti Guerra with 17 kills, one block and five digs and senior setter Bella Plotini with three kills, two blocks, 22 assists, eight digs, and eight aces. Avery Garcia and Kolbie Davis also had six kills each, along with three blocks by Garcia and 10 digs by Davis. Marlee Holmes posted a service ace and 13 digs, while Kadyn Singer added four kills and an ace.
Edna traveled to Goliad on Thur., Aug. 29 for the first day of the Goliad Tournament, where they lost 15-25, 10-25 to host Goliad, and fell 18-25, 18-25 to Sinton, but rallied to defeat Schulenburg, 25-22, 17-25, 15-10 to end the first day of pool play.
Ganado Maidens
The Ganado Maidens (1-10) returned to action against Rice Consolidated on Aug. 27 after 10 days off, but couldn’t get traction against the Raiders and lost, 9-25, 14-25, 9-25.
On Thur., Aug. 29, the Maidens returned to Altair for Day One of the Rice Consolidated Tournament where they took on Iola, the No. 2 team in Class 2A, as well as tough Burton and Hallettsville teams. Burton was ranked 20th in Class 2A by MaxPreps at the time.
Ganado lost its tournament opener to Burton, 10-25, 3-25, then fell to Iola, 12-25, 10-25, and to Hallettsville 19-25, 14-25.
