Cowboys take down first district opponent

With a stout defense and two huge pass plays, the Edna Cowboys came back from a 7-3 halftime deficit to defeat the Hallettsville Brahmas 17-7 in the district opener for both teams.
It was a rough first half for the Cowboys. At halftime they only had two first downs and, for the second week in a row, a large number of penalties called on them. Because of the penalties, the offense never was able to get anything going.
Hallettsville and Edna traded punts on their first drives of the game, but halfway through the first quarter the Brahmas got on the board. A 63 yard pass completion for a touchdown gave the Brahmas a 7-0 lead.
The remainder of the first quarter and most of the second quarter was a defensive battle from both sides, but as the end of the first half drew close, the Cowboys recovered a Brahma fumble at the Hallettsville 24 yard line. Santiago Villanueva connected for a 37 yard field goal with 30 second left before halftime and the Cowboys went into halftime trailing 7-3.
“The offense came out pretty flat and Hallettsville did a great job,” Cowboy head football coach Jerry Long said. “They had two weeks to get ready for us and and it showed. Coach (Tommy) Psencik does a great job and they have a great coaching staff.”
