Going into the final district baseball game, all playoff seeding was still undecided, and there were five teams that still had a shot to grab one of the playoff spots.
Edna went into the game as the fifth seed, knowing they needed a win and an Industrial win over Tidehaven in order to force a play-in game against Tidehaven to determine who whould ultimately make the playoffs.
With the threat of evening rain looming, Edna and Industrial moved their start times to 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.
Having the early start, the Cowboys came out cold and fell behind Yoakum in the top of the third inning, 2-0. Knowing their season was on the line the Cowboys put up five runs of their own in the bottom of the third and kept adding runs until they walked away with a 9-5 win.
At the same time, the Cobras game was finishing, and the outcome was not what Edna wanted to hear. Industrial put the bat on the ball, racking up eight hits, compared to nine hits for Tidehaven, but Industrial was unable to push any runs across and lost 3-0.
Because of the loss, Edna was pushed out of the playoffs. The loss also dropped Industrial into a fourth place tie with Tidehaven. Industrial will play Tidehaven on Thursday to determine who enters the playoffs as the three and four seed. The time and location have not yet been set.
The loser of this game will face Marion (17-7, 10-0) in the Bi-District playoff round, while the winner will face San Antonio Cole (11-11, 7-3).
The Ganado Indians went into their final district game with a playoff spot secured and knowing a victory over Louise would give them the third place spot. Ganado took care of business and won 8-0.
Sabinal and Falls City will play today to determine playoff seeding. The Indians will play the team that loses this game in the Bi-District round.
The Maidens and Cobra girls will begin their playoff journey today.
Industrial (20-11-1) will play a three game series against Nixon-Smiley (21-7). Game one is today at 4 p.m. in Seguin, with game two to immediately follow and game three, if necessary, will be Saturday at 6 p.m., also in Seguin.
The Maidens will face Stockdale today at 6 p.m. in Goliad. It is a single game series.
