Edna, Industrial Earn VB Tourney Trophies

Edna Cowgirls

The Edna Cowgirls (14-14) brought home more silver over Labor Day weekend, earning second place in the Silver Bracket of the Goliad Tournament against stiff competition.

Edna lost to top-ranked Class 3A Goliad in its opening game on Aug. 29, 15-25, 10-25, and fell to Class 4A Sinton, 18-25, 18-25, before beating 16th-ranked Class 2A Schulenburg, 25-22, 17-25, 15-10. The Cowgirls rolled past Class 4A Rockport-Fulton, 25-12, 25-12, and beat Class 5A Victoria East, 25-17, 20-25, 15-13 to face Schulenburg again for the Silver Bracket title. The Shorthorns defeated Edna, 24-26, 25-27, for first in the bracket.

Senior Shanti Guerra earned All-Tournament Team honors.

The Cowgirls traveled to Gonzales on Tues., Sept. 3, for a non-district matchup and beat the Apaches, 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 to even their record at 14-14 for the season. 

Statistically, Guerra led the Cowgirls with 15 kills, seven digs and a block; Kolbie Davis had seven kills, 11 aces, and 13 digs; Bella Plotini had an ace, two kills, 10 digs, and 25 assists; Avery Garcia had five kills, two blocks and two digs; and Marlee Holmes had seven digs.

Edna travels to Bay City on Fri., Sept. 6 for a non-district game with the varsity playing at 4:30 p.m., followed by the JV and freshman teams. The Cowgirls wrap up their non-district schedule on Tues., Sept. 10 at Weimar, with the freshman and JV teams playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6 p.m.

District 25-3A play opens on Fri., Sept. 13 when the Cowgirls host Industrial with varsity playing first at 4:30 p.m., followed by the freshman and JV teams.

Industrial Cobras

The Industrial Cobras (19-12) keep adding to the trophy case while building pre-district experience.

Over the Labor Day weekend, Industrial finished in third place in the Gold Bracket at the Seguin Tournament. Senior middle blocker Deziree Evans earned All-Tournament Team with 43 kills, a hitting percentage of .284, and 10 blocks.

The Cobras opened the tournament by defeating Class 3A Poth, 25-20, 25-20 and Class 5A Southside, 25-21, 25-17 before losing to Class 5A Medina Valley, 25-23, 20-25, 21-25. On the second day, Industrial defeated Class 6A Stevens, 25-18, 25-23, lost to Class 5A Navarro, 25-21, 20-25, 15-25, but rebounded to defeat Class 3A Taft, 25-12, 25-18. On the final day, the Cobras beat Stevens again, 25-21, 25-18, but lost to Class 5A Gregory-Portland, 25-17, 22-25, 23-25, to finish third in the top bracket.

Leading the Cobras statistically were Karli Stanush with 74 kills, Pacie Roe with 16 service aces and 119 assists, Autumn Kallus with 88 digs, and Evans with 10 blocks.

Industrial returned to Vanderbilt on Tues., Sept. 3 and defeated Rockport-Fulton, 25-20, 25-12, 25-14.  

Stanush tallied eight kills, 13 digs, and three service aces; Kaylee Honc had seven kills; Roe contributed 14 assists, three blocks, and four aces; Kate Simons added 11 assists; Madi Kubecka blocked three shots; and Kallus made 11 digs.

The Cobras host Victoria East Fri., Sept. 6 with varsity first at 5 p.m., followed by JV A and JV B teams at 6:30 p.m. They conclude pre-district on Tues., Sept. 10 at Calallen High School, ranked 11 in Class 4A, with both JV teams at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.

Industrial begins District 25-3A play on Fri., Sept. 13 at Edna, with varsity at 5 p.m. and JV teams to follow, and at Columbus on Tues., Sept. 17 with JV teams at 5 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m.

Ganado Maidens

The Ganado Maidens (2-15) took on tough competition over Labor Day Weekend in the Rice Consolidated Tournament.

The Maidens dropped their opening matches on Thur., Aug. 29 against 14th-ranked Class 2A Burton, 10-25, 3-25; second-ranked Class 2A Iola, 12-25, 10-25; and Class 3A Hallettsville, 19-25, 14-25. On Fri., Aug. 30, they lost to seventh-ranked Class A Fayetteville, 22-25, 10-25, then fell to Class 3A Palacios, 9-25, 23-25, and to Class 3A Tidehaven, 14-25, 27-25, 2-15. On Sat., Aug. 31, the Maidens lost to Class 4A Giddings, 7-25, 15-25, but ended the tournament on a high note by defeating Class 3A Van Vleck, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18.

On Tues., Sept. 3, the Maidens traveled to Palacios for a non-district game and lost, 12-25, 17-25, 15-25. 

Ganado returns home Thursday to host the Ganado Tournament over the weekend.

They travel to Boling on Tues., Sept. 10 for a non-district game beginning at 5 p.m., then travel to Brazos on Fri., Sept. 13 for a 4:30 p.m. non-district game.
