It took an extra quarter, but the Edna Cowboys basketball team defeated Marion 65-57, in overtime, to win the Bi-District playoff game.

Marion entered the game with a 16-16 record, but played above what their record indicated.

“Marion has a very good ball club,” Cowboys Basketball Head Coach Sheldon Moor said. “I told the boys going in it was going to be a battle. And hats off to Marion, they played very well.”

Marion played so well, in fact, it appeared as if Edna’s amazing season was going to come to an early end as the Cowboys went into the locker room at halftime, facing a 16 point deficit.

“We had our identity taken away from us,” Moor explained about the first half of the game. “We were not getting stops on the defensive end. We were messing up regular stuff we’ve been doing for weeks. We were sitting in a very quite locker room at halftime. I told them Marion is out basketballing us.”

In the second half, senior Kevin Robinson put the team on his back.

“That is a senior who didn’t want to not lace them up again,” Moor said. “We made some adjustments to out offense and we put Robinson in the post, the boys fed him, and he ate. Rebounding, Kevin was a vacuum in the second half. Markel Soto also was big in the second half.”

The Cowboys were able to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

“In overtime, our strategy didn’t change a bit, we kept doing what got us here,” Moor continued. “Robinson ended up not getting a break. He was on the court all four quarters, and overtime.”

With the win, Edna (18-3) will face Crystal City (20-13) in the Area playoff round. The Area playoff game will be played at the end of the week, although the details have not been set yet.

“I haven’t had a chance to watch much film about Crystal City, but I believe they are a run and gun team and quick on offense,” Moor concluded. “They run a zone defensive. If they hit their shots, they can be dangerous.”

Kevin Robinson 28 points; Markel Soto 13 points; Floyd Ragston 9 points; Jovone Ragston 9 points; Jaiden Clay 4 points; Campton Hicks 2 points.
