JC Softball plays first scrimmage
The Ganado Maidens hosted the Edna Cowgirls on Friday, Feb. 11, in the first scrimmage of the season for both teams.
Coaches mixed and matched to find out what their girls could do.
Maidens Macy Kolacny homered in the first inning and Cowgirl Laney Doelitsch crushed a three run homer later in the scrimmage.
"The basketball players have only had two days of practice, so there is still some rust to knock off," Cowgirls Head Coach Kayla Wilson said. "However, I'm proud of the whole team for never giving up and being ready for anything we threw their way. We had a different athlete in numerous positions almost every inning, and every single one of them handled the changes well.”
The scrimmage did exactly what it was meant to: it gave both coaches an idea what needs to be worked on, so early in the season.
“I told the girls I saw a lot of positives, but there is also a lot to work on,” Wilson said. “The season is just starting, there are many new faces that have to learn how we run the program, the ins and outs of Edna Softball.
“I feel like for our first scrimmage and finally having everyone together there were some great things that happened and some things that we need to focus on and tidy up,” Maidens Head Coach Jordin Jones said. “There are a couple of things I believe we need to work on- timely hitting, being a hard out at the plate, controlling our pitches and hitting spots. Cleaning up little mistakes here and there will go a long way for us."
Along with things to work on, the scrimmage showed things that are already working right for both teams.
“Doelitsch had a very timely three run homer,” Wilson said. “She made some adjustments at the plate after reaching first twice on two errors. Sophomore Lainee Ballin had a gorgeous double scoring Doelitsch in the first inning, then had two quality at bats both resulting in walks, and a solid game behind the plate. Freshman Shanti Guerra had a great night on the mound with six strikeouts and only two walks with her first varsity start."
“A lot of girls contributed to the scrimmage against Edna,” Jones said. “Especially in the last inning. Our top of the lineup got on base and the middle of the order had timely hits and good baserunning. All around I thought these girls did great for their first outing and coming back and competing when they were down. It shows grit and it shows wanting to win.”
The Cowgirls and Maidens will travel to Vanderbilt to compete with the Cobras in the Ted Malek Cobra Classic on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
