The Edna First Baptist Church Upward Basketball League will have its first game on January 19. For the youths of Edna, this is something that has been going on for a long time and the numbers show steady to increased numbers over recent years.
“Ive been involved for 13 years,” FBC Upward Basketball League Director Steve Johnson said. “I started as a coach. I have been involved for 13 years but I think it started 18 years ago in Edna.
“We have 28 teams, 14 cheerleaders and 171 players, and I think that is a record. The numbers really stared picking up a couple of years ago. Saturday morning, for the first three or four weeks, you can barely get into this place. Parents, grandparents, they are all here.”
The league is there to give the kids something fun entertainment and to learn basic basketball in a competitive environment while providing equal playing time.
